CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Bri

The smell of the ocean invades my senses as we drive to Everett’s home. I’m beyond excited because I haven’t been able to do this in years. To take off in the middle of a work week and not worry about anything else. Maybe we should be worried, but I’m choosing to look at this as a blessing in disguise. There’s something so thrilling about experiencing this with him, one of the few things we’ve been able to fit in. Although this is his home, it already feels like mine too. Being with him is home, wherever that may be.

Rolling down the window slightly, I turn my face into the sunshine, letting the warmth flow through my body. As we drive along the streets, I can’t help but notice the palm trees and well-kept yards of the community.

Everett waves to people as we get further in. He’s acknowledging others, smiling, and looking happier than I’ve seen him in a long time. Deep dimples show his excitement at being here.

I glance over, giggling. “I haven’t seen you like this…ever, I don’t think.”

He blushes, fucking blushes. “I don’t guess I realized how much I needed to come to the West coast, how much I needed a change of scenery. I love Nashville, it’s my home, but there’s so much pressure there right now. What with the record company and us doing our own album and now all this uncertainty of what’s going to happen. I didn’t realize how much of a weight was on my shoulders. As soon as we were off that plane, I saw the sunshine, smelled the ocean, and felt the warmth on my skin. I knew everything would be okay. I hope you feel the same way too.”

Sincerity is sexy.

I love everything about it.

Grabbing his hand, I assure him we’re going to be okay. “We’re gonna make it through this. Even if they manage to keep the injunction, we’ll figure out another way. I’m not scared of working hard nor going toe to toe with anyone. As long as you’re here with me and standing by my side.”

His eyes soften. “I wish I believed in myself half as much as you believe in me.”

“Don’t worry, I believe in you enough for the both of us.”
